Don't forget to check out the Shooting Results page, for my new records. Three groups under .2 MOA at 200 yards - and my latest record group: 3 shots measuring .5 inches from edge to edge (.192 center to center) - .091 MOA!Also, Remington just released 5R versions in .223 and .300 Win Mag! This is VERY cool news. So far, I know the rifles are similar in looks to the .308 model 5R, both 24" long, the .223 has a 1:9 twist rate, and I think the .300 is 1:10.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The mysterious "Remington 700 5R" .308 rifle that (for good reason) generates so many questions within the .308 bolt rifle community.
I first came across the Remington 5R two years ago, when a co-worker mentioned witnessing an unfathomable single hole 5 shot group at 200 yards. To be fair, it had been shot by an active duty SEAL sniper, but regardless I had to learn more.
First, the details were vague, many of them were opinions from discussion group forums, most with disagreements to the specifics. Second, you won't find the rifle on Remington's website. It is a special yearly production in the neighborhood of 500 per year, that Remington produces for a few resellers. I spoke with representatives at Remington, as well as a few of the resellers. I was able to confirm that the rifles exist (a start I guess...) but no one could tell me the history or the exact specifics of the rifle itself.
Scott does a great job of explaining the specifics of the barrel in his article (see above link), but again, speculations remained about this rifle vs. the Army's M24, also made by Remington (see http://aspiringtech.net/nobull/M24SWS.html). As near as I can figure out, the 5R is not the M24, nor is it made from discarded M24 barrels that may not have met tolerances. That said, the "Milspec" designation is there for a reason; the barrel is 24" long, and (importantly) it has a faster twist rate of 1:11.25 not often seen in .308 rifles (the 700 Police models all have a 1:12 twist). Given the faster twist rate, this rifle does a better job shooting heavier bullets, like the 175 grain Sierra, where the standard 700's prefer 168 grains.
At the time, I owned a 6 month old 700 Police model with a 26" barrel and (as above) 1:12 twist. It was a nice rifle, and was capable of half inch groups, but I felt like I had to "force it", and one inch groups were more typical. I was sucked in by the hype and mystery surrounding the 5R and knew I would not be content until I "traded up".
Two things were holding me back though. The 5R comes only in stainless (I'm a fan of flat black), and the stock is a slightly smaller, less "overmoulded" version than the Police stock. The stock is also black, but with a slight green spiderweb pattern that looks cool with the stainless, but was not my favorite look overall. I had to decide if I was brave enough to swap stocks, and paint a brand new rifle (more precisely, to take sandpaper to a brand new rifle...). I guess I was.
The official name for the rifle (from the packaging) is; "700 Stainless Special 5-R Milspec Barrel". The label then says "Model 700 Stainless, 24" Barrel .308 Win", "Order # 29662" Here is what it looks like out of the box:

WHERE'S PART 2!!!
ReplyDelete(*ahem*)
I'm actually very interested in acquiring one of these, so I'd like to know more about them.
Thanks Kevin, I'll try to post it tonight.
ReplyDeleteToby, would you mind sending me an email offline?
ReplyDeletexdclocks [AT] ipsc.org
Toby,
ReplyDeleteYou and Scott, Spotter & Shooter, deadly pair. I just received my 700 SS 5-R from Scott. Thanks guys for the info. A quest in progress, mounts, scope, and some quality trigger time. Rick
Rick - sounds like a plan! Do you have the X-Mark trigger? I've found my trigger (previous to X-Mark) to be very adjustable...
ReplyDeleteI really love my TPS rings and base. Might do a Leupold Mk4 scope if I were going to do it over again, but no real complaints with the Super Sniper...
Good luck!
Toby,
ReplyDeleteYes, it has the X-mark trigger. I will soon be ready to trip the X.
I just got mine this week and I am at a loss as to what scope I should use on this. Any recomendations on scopes would be great. My buddies haven't recommended one scope under $1,000. Any ideas for scopes under $600?
ReplyDeleteRegarding scopes, I'm not an expert but you should check out www.swfa.com, or maybe even call them and see what they recommend. My Super Sniper is great, for far less than $600, but I think you can even get a Leupold model or two for that price as well.
ReplyDeleteMy neighbor has a Springfield Government scope with .308 bullet drop info on the reticle - it's pretty cool as well, for $599 I think.
Good luck, let me know what you end up with.
Toby,
ReplyDeleteI got a Swarovski scope. 4 6.5-20x50mm and I just couldn't find a scope under $600 that worked for me as I had hoped...... more like $1,100. I'll let you know how it works out.
Awesome!
ReplyDeleteHey - how did the 168's group? I did not see any results on those. Thanks, Jim
ReplyDeleteHey Jim,
ReplyDeleteI'll have to look back, I recall having some fine groups with both Black Hills and Federal 168, but I've been pretty much shooting 175's now - especially now that I'm realoading. I'm also planning to try some 180 Berger VLD's - I've heard good things about those bullets.
Take care!
I just bought the 5r and am interested in painting the barrell. Any info would help.
ReplyDeleteI just purchased this rifle and I cant wait to get it!!!!!
ReplyDeleteQuestion though, I have been trying to figure out how to break in the barrel (this is my first rifle). I found the barrel break in proceedures at "http://www.rifle-accuracy-reports.com/barrel-break-in.html". Although I have a few questions. I have "heard" that Sweets 7.62 can damage the stainless steel barrel, Is that True? Also, what barrel break in proceedures did you use? Next, should I use a Jag with an O-ring or is one without just fine. What do you think of M-Pro 7 cleaner/lube for the bolt? Or Kal-Gard KG-4? And lastly would you recommend a stainless steel rod or clad rod?
I just want to take good care of this rifle!!
Thanks!!
Alex, sorry I missed these last questions.
ReplyDeleteI'm not the authority on barrel break in, or on cleaning, but here are my thoughts:
First, understand that break in simply removes extra burrs from your barrel. Folks clean after every shot because a significant amount of copper builds up on these burrs, and if you don't clean it off, you simply won't "polish" the barrel very fast, and it may take you a while to realize good accuracy.
I shot about 20 rounds, cleaning after every shot, and then I went to 5 shot groups. Those first shots are great to use to get your scope roughly dialed in, etc.
I clean with a Tipton carbon fiber rod, and use a Parker Hale style jag. I never use a brush jag, though I have used cleaning compounds a couple times.
I use Sweets a ton, would not leave it in for long, but nothing works as well on copper as Sweets, in my opinion. That said, once the 5R is broken in, there is not a ton of fouling. I shot 60 rounds the other day, and the rifle was clean after 5 patches...
I had been looking @ the Rem700s and was getting dizzy in the procees (there are so many). Figured on the 700P until I found the 5-R. This site pushed me over the hump.
ReplyDeleteWould like to go the Duracoat route myself. I've always been a do-it-yourselfer. Perusing the 'net I came across some camo'ed paint jobs that really piqued my interest: Here Here and Here
Toby, could you expand on how far you stripped the trigger? Mine is the newer one. A concern of mine is restricting the movement of the "bolt stop release" and "floor plate latch" in the process of applying the Duracoat.
Also, was it necessary to separate the bolt plug from the bolt assembly? Just looking down the road and trying to not create a problem (attaching the plug to the assembly via Duracoat) if a bolt disassembly ever becomes necessary. Thanks in advance.
Hey, Bud, great questions.
ReplyDeleteWith the trigger system removed, i taped off all of the internals, leaving only the exposed trigger for painting. I painted the whole magazine, and drop system, lightly, and have had no trouble.
The bolt I would do differently, if I were to do it over. I taped off the lugs, but still applied too much paint to the bolt itself, and had to buff it a bit, after i was done. Remington suggests simply leaving the bolt in the rifle when painting. I don't think i'd go that far, but I'd certainly concentrate on the handle, and not spray as much on the bolt itself - only enough to black the finish...
Best of luck!
Toby, from your answer in response to the bolt I discern that you did NOT separate the bolt plug from the bolt assembly? Looking Here and paying attention to parts numbered 2 and 17, and comparing the actual parts in hand, would you anticipate a problem in the future breaking down the bolt because of the paint?
ReplyDeleteThere is a gap there that
I can get (6) dollar bills into. After having painted yours, do you still have that gap betweeen the two parts?
(That link ABOVE is a pretty good one for those interested in a do-it-yourself project involving the Rem700.)
Again, thanking you in advance.
what kind of scope rings and base do you have on your 5r?
ReplyDeleteim ordering a milspec in about a week and from everything ive read this rifle is amazing, i can't wait to start punching those insanely tight groups.
Hi Reid,
ReplyDeleteThey are made by TPS (TacticalPrecision.com). I would have originally gone with Badger, probably, but Badger was twice as expensive. I have been really happy with the TPS gear. Also see the comments at the end of this page: http://www.tobystactical.com/2007/11/remington-700-5r-milspec-part-3.html
i just bought one of these as my first gun, SWFA super sniper scope on it (decent), and harris bipod
ReplyDeletei think this is going to spoil me, wont be able to get as awesome of a gun for the rest of my life
Toby,
ReplyDeleteI just thought that I would pass on the break-in instructions that I got from Remington for my 5R. I followed these instructions to the letter. By the way, my 5R takes 5 rounds in the well with one more in the chamber. Is this typical with other 5R owners?

Response (Marcus) - 06/26/2008 09:14 AM
We do not have an official break in recommendation, however I listed below a widely used and accepted procedure.
Use a good quality cleaning rod, a good quality bronze brush and patch tip, flannel patches and quality bore solvent. (I recommend the use of Remington Brite Bore Cleaner & Rem Oil).
INSTRUCTIONS:
For the first 20 shots, you should do the following:
For the first 10 shots, run a patch saturated with Rem Oil through the bore after each of the first 10 shots, and follow up with a patch saturated with Remington Brite Bore, and finally a clean patch to remove all residue.
For each of the next 10 shots, run a patch saturated with Rem Oil through the bore after every two shots, and follow up with a patch saturated with Remington Brite Bore, and finally a clean patch to remove all residue. Now follow the cleaning guidelines below:
To ensure the highest possible barrel quality/life, you should repeat this cleaning procedure every 20-25 shots until the barrel has had at least 100 rounds through it. Failure to do so could result in excessive build up of fouling (copper/lead deposits) in the bore causing decreased accuracy and requiring more frequent cleaning between shots.
1.) Saturate a patch with Rem Oil, run the patch thru the bore 5 times to remove powder residue, fouling and to “wet” the bore. Toss the patch when done with this step.
2.) Saturate a new clean patch with Remington Brite Bore Cleaner, run that patch thru the bore (from breech end ONLY, requires removal of bolt on bolt action rifles) and make 20 passes through the barrel (10 Cycles) - patch should be wrapped around the bore brush, toss patch when done.
3.) Saturate a new patch with Rem Oil, run patch in bore 5 times and let soak in the barrel for 10-20 minutes, you can use a patch tip vs. bore brush for this step.
4.) Saturate the bare brush with Remington Brite Bore Cleaner. Make 20 passes (10 Cycles) thru the bore.
5.) Saturate a new patch with Rem Oil and run patch in bore 5 cycles, let soak in bore for 10 minutes.
6.) Push 3 clean patches on a patch tip or around the bore brush thru the barrel to remove excess solvent and Rem Oil. (run a light coat of Rem Oil through the bore on a clean patch if you are going to store the rifle for any length of time).
Barrel cleaning is now complete.
I have a 5r and everyone is talking about how good it shoots, but i cant seem to get anything less than a 1 inch group at 100 yards. I am useing federal 168 grain smk,and blackhills 168. But i have noticed that the barrel has appeared to be crooked in the stock but is still freefloating. Could that be the problem with accuracy?
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's a problem, unless you can't get a dollar bill to slide in between the barrel and the handguard.
ReplyDeleteRegarding groups, even with 168's that sounds too big, but I think you need to try the heavier bullets. Can you find Fed Gold Medal 175 anywhere?
When you said handguard did you mean triggerguard? And i can only order the 175 online. I cant find any around where i live.
ReplyDeleteNo, I mean the front of the stock. It's ok to have a bigger gap on one side than the other, as long as the stock doesn't touch the barrel.
ReplyDeleteammoman.com once had a great deal on 175's, 200 rounds for $250. I order mine from midway USA, and reload...
Sorry about the handguard, i thought you meant slide a dollar bill from the barrel to the handguard i read it wrong.
ReplyDeleteNow that you have had some time... What have you found the gun likes as far a s reloading? have you come up with a nice "recipe" yet or can you point us followers in the general direction to find such info.
ReplyDeleteHi Chris, thanks for the comment. If you notice my little update at the top of the page, it has some basic ingredients. I'll admit, I've not tried a ton, but I've played with powder amounts quite a bit, as well as seating depths. Here's what seems to be the best so far: Fed Gold Medal Match brass and primers. 41 grains of Varget, and Sierra 175 BTHP Match bullets seated at the standard 2.810 OAL. I use a Lee single stage press, and I only neck size. I also use a factory crimp die...
ReplyDeleteHope that helps!
I appreciate what you’ve done here. I was looking for a dual-purpose rifle that I could hunt with and still have some fun from the bench. Having shot a little for the Marine Corps, I’m partial to heavy 308’s so the 700P was a natural match. Searching the Internet brought me to your page and an appreciation for the time and labor you’ve spent to share your experiences. I ordered a 5R day before yesterday and look forward to the fun.
ReplyDeleteI want to buy a 700 ss 5-r milspec so bad! I just wanted know somethings though, is the barrel free floating, if i blueprint the action, cyrofreeze the barrel, crown the barrel, bed the action, etc. will it decrease accuracy? Also, i looked on gun broker, and i saw the rifle in .308, but i also saw one that said it was .300 win mag and it was a new type or something, do you know if it is the same rifle, and if so, if it is as accurate. I really want the
ReplyDelete5r milspec in .308, but .300 win mag would be even better, especially because i would want to do long range shots, and elk hunting. does .308 do well with elk up to 300-400 yards?

David - thanks for the heads up - this is new news for me. I think 300 mag would be awesome. I don't know what to tell you about accuracy, but I bet it would be a sweet rifle!
ReplyDeleteYes, it seems to be true that the Remington 700 5R Milspec now comes in .300 Win. From what I understand, the first batch of 250 of these rifles will come with a 24 inch barrel. After that, the standard barrel length will be 26 inches.
ReplyDeleteA 24" version would be great. I still wonder why Remington doesn't advertize or produce these in bigger numbers.
ReplyDeleteAny idea what the twist rates will be?
I also, wanted to know toby, is the 700ss accurate because of the barrel, and if so is it the same barrel on the .300 win mag. Also, i am looking for a scope and went on swfa website. i have a few questions, 1st of all, i want to be making shots up to 1,000 yards, and don't want only be able to have a fixed power on the scope ( i would also want to possibly have a rangefinder on it, but not needed) what would be a good scope for what i want, and what would be a good range of power variable on the scope, is 14 a high power?
ReplyDeletei've seen some nice scopes from nikon that had range finder, and up to 14 power. I also saw some nice leupolds, especially the vx's and mark 4's, but those looked expensive, and i can only spend up to 2,100.
the other thing is, i want to put a detachable mag system on there, will it affect accuracy, i want to put it on there to make a replica of the remington 700 usr :
http://www.remingtonmilitary.com/usr.htm
sorry for all the questions, thanks
Great questions David - I'll do my best to answer them.
ReplyDeleteThe 700 (.308) is accurate because of the "milspec" barrel. the 5 lands and grooves, combined with 1:11.25 twist rate is a perfect match for 175 grain bullets. They call it the "milspec" becuase it shares the characteristics of the M24 sniper rifle.
That said, there is no M24 chambered in .223, but there is one in .300. See this link: http://www.remingtonle.com/rifles/m24.htm. My guess is the 5R in .300 would share these characteristics.
Scopes are a huge topic. To answer your question specifically, a 14x would be plenty for me. But there are some tactical models that go a lot higher (8-24x is one example)...
I'd buy a rangefinder seperately - it would increase your options.
Detachable mag systems don't to my knowledge decrease accuracy. I've heard of feeding trouble, but just second hand. I'd love to do a detachable mag system, but the good ones are $300, just for the system, with each additional magazine at least $50...
so could you recommend a scope i that i can have a varied power, is good, and that i can use in somewhat low light (i ask the low light one because when i was deer hunting this season, at 5:00 p.m. already it was getting dark and was hard to see the deer, especially through the scope)
ReplyDeleteand also, would you recommend getting the 5r in .300 win mag
ReplyDeleteby the way they do have a 5r in .223, is there anyway someone could review the 5r in .300 win mag? or do you know of someone that would/could?
ReplyDeleteToby,
ReplyDeleteI took my 5-R to the range for the first time today and was not disappointed. It performed just as you described and took about 30 rounds to break-in. I’ve fired Douglas, Schneider and Shilen barrels and have never seen anything like this 5-R. I’ll eventually have to spend a day to find out the max rounds I can fire before fouling opens the groups up. Over 5, 5 shot groups from 100, I averaged .646”. Not so impressive, but every group started with a clean barrel and I haven’t been at a bench in 15 years. Lot’s of kinks to work out. My 5, 5 shot groups at 200 averaged .665”. That impressed me enough to laugh out loud. I shot a little benchrest several years ago and owned some fantastic shooters. Some were as near perfect as I’ve ever seen. Having said that, this 5-R is without a doubt the most pleasing OEM rifle I’ve ever unwrapped.
Lapua brass, full length sized. I’m interested to see what happens now that my brass is formed.
275gr Sierra Match King
Seated to 2.81 OAL
Federal #210M primers.
41gr Varget
Correction!!
ReplyDelete175gr Sierra Match King
Mark - nice work! I bet you will have smaller averages now that the brass is fire formed. I'd love to try some Lapua brass, I'll have to order some soon.
ReplyDeleteCongrats!
Toby, Thanks for all of the good information. I just got a 700 SS 5R with badger base/ rings and a leupold mark 4 8.5-25x50 ER/T. I got some 175g Matchkings loaded and ready to go. Can't wait to get to the range to try out the gun! What type of sling is that on yours?
ReplyDelete-Andy
Andy - you're the man! Good for you for not scrimping on base, rings, and scope! I bet that Leupold is wicked cool.
ReplyDeleteThe sling I use is the Tactical Intervention M24 sling (http://www.tacticalintervention.com). It's got the detachable cuff, which is handy, and way easier for me compared to wrapping my left arm up just right in the sling.
I do need to practice with it more though, its easier for me to use it prone than sitting on a bench...
Congrats on a sweet set up - are you going to paint it?
I wanted to do flat black but the Duracoat jobs that I've seen in person don't impress me that much (even though yours looks great). Instead I was going to try Cerakote, but I can't find anyone close to do it and I haven't seen it on any finished guns, in person, yet. None the less, I plan on leaving the gun unpainted for now b/c I still feel a little guilty about the price of the scope. Have you heard any pros or cons of Cerakote?
ReplyDelete-Andy
I've only heard good things.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy for me to say this now that I'm done, but in all honesty, I'd be WAY less OCD about the paint than I was to begin with. Not sure I'd use Krylon, but you never know.
The Duracoat worked real well, and if you have a compressor it's easy. Not sure about what you've seen, but if you keep it thin, it should be a no-brainer.
Good luck - send pictures!
David,
ReplyDeleteIs there a particular reason why you'd want a 700 5R in .300 Win? .308 should be fine for shooting up to 1000 yards, but even so, only the best of the best shooters can shoot with any consistancy at the 1000 yard range. The recoil of the .300 Win caliber is quite a kick which isn't conducive to accurate shooting long range, so unless you have a very specific reason to go with a 700 5R in .300, I'd recommend the .308 caliber.
As far as scopes are concerned, two high quality scopes would be the Schmidt & Bender 3-12x50 Police Marksman and the Premier Reticles Heritage 3-15x50 scope, which should take you out to 1000 yards. The Schmidt & Bender scope mentioned is what Marine Scout snipers use on their M40 A3 sniper rifles in Iraq, and they are able to hit targets out to 1000 yards. Remember that the accuracy of your rifle is only as good as it's weakest link. With the Remington 700 5R, I mounted the Schmidt & Bender 3-12x50 Police Marksman scope on a 20 MOA Badger Ordinance rail (Part# 306-06) and use the Badger Ordinance 34mm rings (Part# 306-75). You can see both of the mentioned scopes at www.riflescopes.com, and the Badger Ordinance products at www.snipercountrypx.com.

Hi All, just wanted to thank you for your website up front. I have purchase a 5R but have yet to shoot it. I bought the Valdada 2pc HD Picatinny extended rail and mil spec low rings, really liked them. I also have MK 4 6.5-20x50 scope. I have also been searching a lot for break in info and came across this at remington website for the M24 http://www.remingtonmilitary.com/downloads.htm . Just thought this might be interesting to some of you. First time I have ever posted in a blog. Hope this helps. I have yet to find any M118 or Federal Gold match ammo anywhere. If someone comes across any can you post it if the web owner allows?
ReplyDeleteI have a general question, i have an ar-15, and i wanted to buy some furniture for it. The question was, is a free floating forearm the same thing as a free float tube? Do the both free float the barrel? Thanks!

ReplyDeletetoby, just ordered 1 of 250 5r in .300 win mag im waiting on tps rings and base and leupold mk4 scope and berger vlds will update as soon as i got it all set up also i want to install a muzzlebrake any particular smith and brake recommendations??? i dont want to have accuracy affected..thank u
ReplyDeleteI just picked one up in .308 a couple of weeks ago. It's the new model with the x-mark pro adjustable trigger. I was going to get a 700P until I found this post with such good infromation that I decided to go with the mil-spec model. So far I've been very please with it. The trigger is nice and the action seems to be pretty smooth with a good lock-up. I broke it with 24 rounds on regular M118 and it was shooting 1/2 moa already. Loaded up some handloads with SMKG 168s and 175s. Can't wait to see what she can do once I get some more rounds through her. By the way, I recommend Top Brass for thier .223 and .308.
ReplyDeleteJust thought I would say that while you probably would be a better person to do the tests I went ahead and bought the 5R in 300 win mag today and cant wait to get it set up. This site was a great help in deciding on a 5r instead of springing for a custom for 4 times the money. will give info when testing begins. Thanks. -Proud new owner of 1 Remington 5R
ReplyDeleteToby, thanks for an informative blog on the Remington 700 with the 5R Mil-Spec Barrel on it. I bought one in .308 last month and am getting ready to Duracoat everything except the stock. By the way, I placed an order for the same gun in .300 WinMag and was told mine came in and I can pick it up as soon as I get $959.95 plus tax I will have it in my hands.
ReplyDeleteI have owned one of these for two years. The 5R is more accurate than other 308 rifles that cost five times as much. I have experienced days when I have shot in the same hole even out to 400 yards. Mine is set up with a 8.5 x 25 Mark IV with 25moa base and badger rings. I shoot Fclass at 1000 yards with the rifle and win some with it. I see a lot of other competitors that use the same rifle.
ReplyDeleteToby:
ReplyDeleteGreat site. I ordered my rifle back in oct of 06, and its been sitting in the safe unfired while I have been gathering accessories. To date, Nikon Monarch x 2.5-10x MD.30mm(very clear), Ken Farrell 20moa mount, TSR low mount rings, Eagle industries cheek pad. Reading your article made me take off of work and go to the range for a break in day. I used English military ball for break in, L2A2, 10rounds cleaning between each round. 100yds, they printed about 1.25". Then fired 3, 5 rd. vollies and cleaned between each volly, FGM 175's, they printed 0.8" @ 100yds. The next 15 rounds were reloads for my Savage LE, 175 SMK. 43grs Varget, Nosler brass, FGM primer. 2.815 OAL. 3 round vollies no cleaning, best group was the last @ 0.6".
After reading your site, I now have dura coat tactical black coming and am looking at the h-s m24 stock,. I appreciate you sharing all your hard work. Great site ,Great Rifle.

Guys, sorry for not replying to the last batch of questions - blogger was not forwarding posts to my email. I'll work my way through the questions in the next bit here.
ReplyDeleteRegarding muzzlebreaks - I've not heard that breaks affect accuracy. It is a process to get the barrel threaded, and you'll certainly want to make sure the crown is left alone. If anyone else has more info, feel free to chime in.
ReplyDeleteDavid, regarding your AR question - a free float handguard and a free float tube are the same thing. They both free float the barrel, but they both require fairly complex gunsmithing to install...
ReplyDeleteThanks toby, also i heard that if you want a .308 round that has a higher velocity and more power (for longer ranges & bigger game) you get should get + P ammunition. So i wanted to know, on the m700 ss, does it say either on the manual or stamped on the gun that it is + P rated? The gun smith said if it isn't that you can change the chamber for one that is rated for + P. He also said it shouldn't really affect accuracy at all when changing chambers, do you agree? By the way, you should check out the Bushnell 4.5- 30x50 mm scope, it is apparently one of the best scopes you could ever buy (also tough as nails). It is listed at $900.00, but you can find it for $300 +.
ReplyDeleteDavid, I'm not sure what kind of gunsmith you are talking to, but I've never ever heard of +P ammunition in a rifle. I know some low end 9mm pistols that aren't suitable for +p ammo, but that's it. Just my 2 cents though.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for a Bushnell being best you could ever buy... That's a stretch for me too. You might check out this article, as a great resource: http://demigodllc.com/articles/practical-long-range-rifle-shooting-equipment/
2.81 OAL for a .308 win and 175 match kings?
ReplyDeleteI would think 2.18 sounds more like it...perhaps you are talking true overall length and not the length from the ogive..?? can someone clarify?
True overall length is the measurement.
ReplyDeleteToby, I just looked at snipercentral.com and they did a review on the m700ss 5r, and uhhhh... they said it only shot .5-.6 moa. I 've been talkin' with one of the guys that did the review, and he said they did break in the barrel. Now i don't know what to do, if i get an m700ss 5r, will it shoot like yours does??? Do you think my local firearms dealer will let me test fire it? I now have doubts about this rifle... Please help me, the guy said a possibility is that the remington factory might not be building those rifles with the same standards. And is it also true that the barrels that go on the m700ss are truly reject barrels from the m24's... I'm starting to wonder if i should buy this rifle or not... Here is the email:
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your thoughts and concerns, but I'm afraid that there is no quantifiable way to prove that breaking in a rifle barrel is going to produce any differences in rifle performance. But I will also say, that by the time we had gotten to the accuracy evaluation of the rifle we had fired enough rounds and cleaned the barrel enough times to qualify as a barrel break-in. > > I am sorry that we have differing opinions on this rifle, but please do keep in mind that these rifles are mass produced rifles with no accurizing work done to the actions, bolt, bolt face or recoil lug and come with a factory Remington trigger that is less than match quality. I was impressed with the rifle as a mass produced rifle and while some of them shoot very well, some of them do not, just like any other mass produced rifle. While the barrel is a nice improvement over a factory heavy barrel, it is not the only thing that contributes to the accuracy of a rifle as you well know. > > Again, I am sorry you do not agree with our review or opinion of the rifle, but we are not going to change the results of our tests because a reader does not like what we wrote.
I went into the review of the 5R having read many of those other articles about the 5R and was hoping to get the same results, and while I was not able to repeat some of the performances that others had, I was still impressed with the results of the rifle. Any mass produced rifle that will shoot a .5" group is to be commended and that is what I did in the review. Now, it did not shoot any sub .25 MOA groups and in reality it is probably unreasonable to think that any rifle from the remington factory will do that. Even their 40x's will not consistently shoot that good. Yes, you will occasionally get a remington that does, especially if you shoot handloads, which we do not, but with factory ammo it is just not feasible to think they will all shoot that good. I have since fired another 5R after that review, though only a couple of groups, and it was right in that same .5 - .6 MOA area. Perhaps I am not as good of a marksman as others, but I do regularly get groups in the teens with various other custom rifles I own. Again do not take this wrong, it is a very good factory produced rifle, but I have just not seen some of the performance that others have with these rifles. Maybe the newer runs of these rifles are not made to the same standards.
Hi David,
ReplyDeleteNo one will (or should) guarantee 1/4 minute accuracy, but everyone I've spoken with (as you can see on these pages) has had pretty solid results.
And .5 MOA, if that is truly an average result, taking all groups into consideration - that is pretty great!
Greeting, first post. I've been thinking of a new 5R but am a fan of the 20" barrel LTR. What's my best option to end up with a dark (as opposed to SS) 20" 5R barrel rifle? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThe LTR is sweet rifle. I don't think I'd get the fluted version, but that's just a personal preference...
ReplyDeleteEverything will be a standard 1:12 twist, but the 5R, you could probably have quite a choice. One thing I'd avoid, there is a 20" version with a rubber stock (I think by Hogue), it was selling for $500 or so - looked too cheap.
Just saw this for the first time though - never even heard of a 20" 5R... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=126013942
toby,ur doing a wonderful thing posting reviews of this phenomenal rifle keep the reviews comin..ive got a 5r with a pride fowler rr800 scope its a no brainer out to 800 yards .read the wind and hold to corresponding numbered line and squeeeeze ..poooom pahhh..works all the time and with factory ammo fgmm2 ..toby,can you post some super accurate loads youve developed as i wanna start reloading due to short supply of factory ammo.thanks again for info and reccomendations of such a wonderful production rifle..
ReplyDeleteThanks - looks like a cool scope.
ReplyDeleteI've posted most of my best load info already - be sure to read through the comments in these articles. I need to find some R-15 powder to test soon though, too...
Take care!
Bought me a new 700 w/ 5R riflings in 300 win. Been doing the break in and noticed something very strange; the stock is beginning to chip where the bolt handle turns down. Closer inspection showed the bolt handle is acting like a recoil lug and hitting the stock when I fire the rifle. I even took out the action and slid it back until the recoil lug met the the aluminum bedding, I then tried to close the bolt and the bolt handle contacted the stock and drove the action forward confirming this. I called the company and they sent me a new stock. Just put it on, and it will have the same problem. Will be sending the rifle in tomorrow. Anyone else have this problem?
ReplyDeleteWOW! Sounds like the rifle was incorrectly built (bolt holes misaligned maybe?)
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised the bolt would even close, once the stock was tightened down...
Keep us posted - hopefully this was a one-off problem, that would definately affect accuracy!
Contacted Rem today, they said that I should take it to a premiere dealer for service. So I will be taking my gun up to Sports World. The guy on the phone said something about re-drilling holes. I didn't like the sound of this. Any advice how to handle this situation?
ReplyDeleteI think new holes are exactly what are needed, and are probably not a big deal. That said, this is a brand new rifle - I think I'd tell Remington this is unacceptable, and I'd ask for a replacement.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty though, if a gunsmith is your only option, it could be to your advantage. You could ask him to glass bed the stock (to be sure it seats correctly). That would be a decent upgrade, and I bet Remington would pay for it.
Hey toby. Thanks for one of the only great resources on the internet for 5R info.
ReplyDeleteI bought a 5R in .308 awhile ago and have slowly been customizing it. Added a Harris Bipod, Tac Ops black cheekpad, a Super Sniper 10X, a Nightforce 20MOA base, Leupold Mark 4 rings, and swapped the stock for a brand new 700P stock (couldn't stand that weird green stock it came with).
This is my first rifle and I've only shot it once, after months of waiting... was hitting clay pigeons from some unknown distance probably half the time. The crosshairs nearly covered the whole pigeon, so I'm assuming it was a good distance out. As you can tell, I'm a complete rookie to rifle shooting.
Anyway, sorry for rambling on... thanks again for the helpful page :)
Hi Tom - thanks for posting! One dot on your mildot scope covers .75 inches at 100 yards. If a clay pigeon is 4", i'd say you were pretty close to 500 yards out (just a guess). Some fine shooting!
ReplyDeleteDavid,
ReplyDeleteDoes your mom know you're using her computer?
Toby,
ReplyDeleteI called the store today about the weird problem I was having with the bolt contacting the gun stock. Turns out, the bolt handle was improperly placed when it was welded together and this is why it was contacting the stock. This means that Monday it will be sent off to Remington. They told me Remington usually takes about 4 weeks!! I also looked at another 5r in 300 win when I was there and that gun did not have the same problem. I guess I selected the one lemon.
My guess is they send you a brand new one... Here's hoping!
ReplyDeleteKeep us posted, for sure.
I really hope so. I don't want to wait forever to shoot my gun. I would really like to try this bad boy out on some coyotes:)
ReplyDeleteSeems like the store you bought it from could bear some of this burden - why wouldn't they let you take the other .300?
ReplyDeleteAs an aside - you can sell those stocks for a decent amount of money. If Remington let you keep the extra stock you should pop it on gunbroker...
Sadly Remington really wanted that other stock back. I called them the other day to get an estimated TOA. The guy said around two weeks and that Remington would likely make a new bolt for me. He said that they take good care of their customers and that my satisfaction is of high concern. It seems like that is all that is going to happen. Really disappointing since I will have been out of my rifle for over 5 weeks by this time. I really feel like Remington dropped the ball on this one. It seems like the gun should not have made it out of the factory with this problem.
ReplyDeleteI have a 5R and am wondering about long range shooting (1200 yards). I want to use a 208 AMAX with RL 17 seating it out to around 2.9 or so and if I can get it up to 2500-2600 i can keep it supersonic to around 1400 yards. I haven't tested it out yet but wondered if anyone had any other cartridges they had made capable of the same thing.
ReplyDeleteWow - that's all new to me. Never even heard of a 208 grain AMAX. Sounds like a lot of velocity for such a heavy bullet. Maybe you are talking .300 mag?
ReplyDeleteWell Its a .308 diameter bullet and a lot of people have told me that but there are places where they list .308 up to like 220 grain bullets. But I have shot a few through my 5r and it likes them as good as any other bullet, and they only are about 1 MOA down farther than a 168 gain at 100 yards but the real difference is that BC and ability to shoot out past the suggested max range for .308 of 800 yards. I guess the reason no one has heard of them is that every one sticks around the 190 SMk at their top end of bullet weight, and that this bullet has to be reloaded since they don't sell it anywhere already loaded.
ReplyDeleteGot my rifle back yesterday. After it was all said and done Remington just put another stock on the gun. It does have a very slight contact with the gun stock when you turn the bolt down but nothing like it used to be. I must admit, i am still a bit dissappointed about the whole situation. Going to shoot some today. Will find out how it does
ReplyDeleteSorry for the frustration - what a pain.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind, the stock is just fiberglass. If the bolt still hits the stock, you should take a dremel and buff around the area. You don't want that puppy making contact at all.
I will definitely do that. I am also mounting a cheek piece on it. I did manage to finish breaking it in. I was just using some cheap 150 grain federal ammunition. I sighted it in and my first group was about .6"!! I was completely taken away. I cleaned my rifle and then fired another group. I may have been off on the first shot and then fired two more. It was another group of about .6" but two bullet holes were one! Never done that before. I really think I can get some good groups with it. I tried some 180 grain Remington core lokt and they did not print so well. I got about an 1.5" group. Over all though, I am just happy to be shooting! Thanks for all the help guys.
ReplyDeleteRead your site, a good one too. Bought a 5r .308, put a Valdada IOR 4-14 x50 MP8 reticule scope with Valdada 20 MOA Picatinney rail and Valdada rings. Duracoated, Harris Bipod. Then broke the barrel in for 40 shots (clean every shot for first 10, then every 5).
ReplyDeleteThen put my first batch of Federal 168 Matchkings in at 100yds. First set all went through one hole! I thought I had missed the target after the first shot. I have never seen or experienced anything like this before. It was luck with that first set because the rest were not in one hole! At least I did it once, rather like a hole in one in golf!!
Nice work! Try 175 MK's when you get a chance, too...
ReplyDeleteToby, when they say that the rem. 5-r milspecs are installed with rejected m-24 barrels, what do they mean by the term "rejected". Do they mean that they are messed barrels and incapable of sufficient acccuracy, or what
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is that they are overrun's of M24 production, not "rejected".
Either way, they are significantly more accurate than the 700p, which is a pretty accurate rifle to begin with.
The only trouble I've ever heard of is from a guy who commented in April saying that his rifle was not mounted to the stock correctly...
Toby, you might want to take a look at the lwrc sabr... i hear that it can put 30,000-35,000 rounds through its barrel, is .308, is deadly accurate, and has different upper for different jobs... and what did u mean by overrun... on the above comment with the other guy???
ReplyDeleteJeez, that SABR looks NICE!
ReplyDeleteI have a 5r in .308 FOR SALE. The rifle has a Mark 4 6-20 w/ TMR, Mark 4 rings and rail base. Anyone interested?
ReplyDeleteNice! a 6-20 TMR is ideal - got pictures?
ReplyDeletehey how much is your 5r that your sellin'??? is it broken in... have you shot it... is it accurate???
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
ReplyDeleteI bought a 5r 308 in February 09, put a mark 4 6-20 on top with leupold 20 moa base and rings (lapped in the scope). Most shots have been from 100 yds off a bench (bipod and rear bag). Shooting handloads (LC brass with IMR4895 40grn-44grn and MK 155's at 1.8 OAL) the best 5 shot group is one hole at .357 center to center, most groups are larger but still under 1 inch. The best 3 shot 100 yrd groups measured .224 and .229 center to center.
I did shoot some 1 gal milk jugs at 572, 574, and 589 yds (can't get the Nikon 800 to range any longer).
As I'm still trying to work up an accurate load, the rifle seems to shoot most loads pretty well. I can't wait to try MK 175's!
If anyone is thinking about buying this rifle, DO IT! IT'S ACCURATE! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
Great job Toby as for the rifles i have one from the first run of the 5r's which it came with a police stock on it. Not the green spiderweb. And just bought one with the green spiderweb from a friend yesterday haven't got to shoot it yet. Seen some nice groups from it at the range before. As for mine it shoots around .3 on a regular basis if it gets any bigger than .6 or.7 it's mostly pilot error. You might want to try some 155 lapua sceners they stay in the .2 and .3 range and have kept them under an inch at 400 a few times. I also have a pss and one of the new sps tactical they all shoot under 1 moa. As for the 5r in .223 and 300 win I read some where that the twist rates were 1in9 on the .223 and 1in10 on the 300 win. Toby thanks for great info always learning new stuff
ReplyDeleteI painted my 5-r with Krylon. Just to give it a try. It comes off easy enough so I wasn't too worried. I think it looks rather good. Plus, I can change it to fit a variety of environments.
ReplyDeleteAnybody had any luck with H4895 and match point bullets? I tried the max load and got some decent groups but not as tight as I was wanting.
Also, has anyone here glass bedded their 5-r? I am considering it. Really like that Devcon Titanium stuff but it is pricy
Toby,
ReplyDeleteAn update to my Rem 700 5R SS--I swapped out my trigger guard for an HS precision Trigger Guard with a 10-rd box mag--nice fit. I got 3/4 MOA at 200 using Federal Vital Shock 165-gr.
- Adam
Wow, nice! How do you like the HS? I have heard the HS is quality all the way but that so is the Badger Ordnance and has cheaper mags (10 rounders). Did you consider the BO?
ReplyDeleteHave a 5R with 1300 rounds through it. Wouldn't shoot straight anymore. Sent it to Remington. They replaced it because the barrel was spent. They said the rifling had low spots in it and was worn. I spent about $500.00 on Ammo. thinking it was everything but the barrel, before I had enough off trying to make it shoot. I too got a lemon. Very dissappointing. I read a nother thread where a guy claiming to be a smith had posted about several 5R coming into his shop that would not shoot better than 1.5". This sounded similar to my rifle. All of his rifles needed the action trued and to be rebarreled. I'm not impressed with this at all. I am impressed that Remington replaced my setup.
ReplyDeleteAnon - did it shoot straight to begin with? What a bummer!
ReplyDeletei almost bought one last night. it was just over $1000 and i had an unchashed $1125 paycheck....should have bought it.
ReplyDeleteWhere do i get this 5R barrel setup from? I live in Australia. Any help from anyone as to specifications of this post would be great. please email me at:
ReplyDeletec_ronaldo_757@hotmail.com
CHEERS!!
Toby,
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to thank you for a great site and all the info. It played a major role in my purchase of the 700 .308 5r. I am a novice to rifles but want to learn long distance target shooting and this appears to be a great start. Also ordered a SS 3-9x42, warne 20moa mount and decided to try the SS tact low rings. Picked up the rifle today and cant wait for the scope to get here. Thanks again for everything.
also wondering if any of these actually say milspec or 5r on the barrel? Mine was brand new in box and is part number 29663 but does not say anything bout 5r or milspec on barrel. It does look identical to all other pics i have seen though.
ReplyDeleteNope - only on the box. Everything else is pretty non-descript. Congrats on the purchase!
ReplyDeleteI just order the R5 in .223, of all the previous posts surprised there was no mention of of well one shot?
ReplyDeleteYou're the first! Let us know how it shoots, for sure.
ReplyDeleteToby
Can anyone tell me how these 700 milspec's shoot with 147gr surplus ammo? I would like to have a cheaper option to plinking. I know it wouldn't shoot to it's potential. But what can I expect? 2MOA?
ReplyDeleteYeah, 2MOA is a fair expectation.
ReplyDeleteI bought a Rem 700 5r in a .300 Win Mag last year. I have put some Blackhills 190 grain HPBT and some Remington with 180 grain bullets to break it in. I have had a problem locking the bolt down with any/all factory ammo. It is EXTREMELY hard to lock it in place. The fired brass was shorter than the value that the Lyman manual lists. When I reloaded some I trimmed the brass so it was even shorter, however, the bolt locked into place as expected. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
ReplyDeleteAlan
I have been reading about the sierra 155 gr. palma matchking. It is suppose to have a coefficient very close to the 175 gr. matchking. Should it shoot as good as the 175 gr., or has anyone tried this bullet in the 5 R and if so how did it shoot.
ReplyDeleteAs far as ID-ing the rifle to confirms it's a 5R barrel, couldn't one just look in at the crown and count the lands? There should be 5 instead of 6. I've ordered one and it's on its way. Will follow with my early results.
ReplyDeleteSounds good! I assume that is an easy way to ID a 5R, yes.
ReplyDeleteI hit the indoor range after work today with my new 5R for the first time. Words can't describe how impressed I am with this weapon. Here's the hardware details:
ReplyDeleteI used Remington combination scope mounts and rings (all in one x 2) that were specifically designed for the model 700. No alignment was necessary: no bull, they were perfectly aligned. I didn't believe it either, so I took them off and remounted them to achieve the same result. I lapped the rings, and torqued both the bottom and top halves to just shy of 20 lbs on a Bushnell Elite 3200 10X MILDOT scope. My cartridge-type laser boresighter didn't show any adjustment necessary at about 15yds in my house.
First shot at 25yds hit 2 1/4in. left and 1/4in low. Second round wallowed out the first round's hole: nice. Third shot joined the first two on the low side: unbelieveable.
I doped the scope, fired three more tight rounds almost dead center, made another adjustment, moved the target to 100yds, and put two rounds right next to each other 2 1/4in. high. Another negative click on the elevation knob and two siamese shots later, I was packing up my swag with a wag.
I have no remorse for selling my Weatherby Vanguard 30-06 in order to upgrade to this fine instrument of death. I'm glad I didn't purchase the way more expensive bases and rings that many "sniper" forums suggested. The Remington all-in-one combos are flawless. I'm also glad I did heed the advice of a couple of "sniper" forum posters by pairing the 5R with the before-mentioned Bushnell scope, which happens to be about $900 cheaper (but just as effective) than the competition.
Get one.
Awesome post, Bradford!
ReplyDeleteWell cool article. . . . I found this because I stumbled into one. I actually thought it was a regular old sendaro. I almost sold it for four hundred dollars . . . .
ReplyDeleteFour hundred! Yikes!
ReplyDeleteI got a a 5R in .223, 24.5 gr.varget and 60 gr. Nosler ballistic tips print nice one holers for me. Did put a jewel trigger in it before even firing a single round with the X Mark trigger.
ReplyDeleteWow! I'll have to get one of those. What ammo were you using? I need to find a place that has Black Hills ammunition for sale near my house, the stuff I'm using now just isn't doing the trick.
ReplyDeleteThanks to this site I now own a milspec 5r. My dad always said "never scrimp on your optics" so I put a Leupold Mark 4 ER/T 8.5 x 25 on top. Looks great. Taking her back to 600 yards tommorrow with some 168 grain bullets my buddy worked up. If those dont work I'll go with the 175 grain. Should be fun. Thanks Toby for the great site.
ReplyDeleteI bought one of these 5R's in a 300 Win Mag a couple of years ago. A friend was so impressed that he bought one in a 300 WM also.
ReplyDeleteWe're shooting 190 grn and 200 grn SMK's and we are consistantly hitting one gallon milk jugs at 1,000 yards. We plan on pushing our targets out to 1,500 and see how they perform.
Hey, I am torn between the Remington 5R and the Remington XCR tactical long range. I would like to be able to shoot out to 1000 yards at some point, most of my shots while hunting have been under 500 yards to date. It would mainly be a hunting rifle. I have a Tikka T3 SS in 300 win mag with a 24" barrel and 1 in 11" twist but just don't think this gun would be capable of what I want to do. I have found the 5R in 24" and 26" barrels, which one would be better? I always thought the 26" would be better for long range in the 300 win mag. They are both about the same price so it mainly comes down to which one is going to be best at what I'm looking to do with it. Also having troubles locating both of them. I followed Toby's advice on gunbroker.com and found a few. Thanks for any advice.
