First off, thank you for all your hard work on this website. I have learned and enjoyed all the information. Toby, I recently tried the Berger VLD 175 Grain as I want a hunting bullet that is fairly accurate. I believe you commented on using the Berger's to a high level of success. Could you, or anyone else comment on the accuracy of the Berger 175 Gr. hunting bullet our of the 5R? What COAL was used? What type of powder & weight? brass & primer? Thank you in advance for any comments you might have.

The reason this rifle performs so well is because ...

The reason this rifle performs so well is because of the 5R barrel. The 5R refers to the way the rifling is produced. The lands in the rifling are set at an angle rather than being straight across. Some people report higher velocities as well due to less bullet contact and therefore friction. This is what makes it a dream to clean and why it doesn't foul as quickly The 5R rifling was developed by Obermeyer Barrels and is available from them for nearly any rifle action so there is no need to get caught up in the Remington marketing ploy of making small runs of them and only releasing them once a year to limited dealers. This type of marketing is just meant to limit supply while driving up demand with all the advertising hype, therefore driving up the price and making them highly sought after. Just call Obermeyer and get one. The Obermeyer barrel will be of better quality and will most likely perform better than the Remington anyway.

As a kid I always shot a 22 but nothing really ser...

As a kid I always shot a 22 but nothing really seriously challenging. Than over a couple nights in hischool I read Charles Henderson's Marine Sniper bio on the late Carlos Hathcock. After finishing it I took the Marlin 25 bolt 22 and CCI stingers. I taped a dime to a stick at 100yds. I sat down, took clip out(loaded single shot) so that I craddle rifle on support arm hugging my knee. I closed my eyes and opened again to see where I was aiming, I adjusted a total of 3 times before I naturally had Simmons crosshairs resting on shiny dime. I pulled the trigger smoothly and "tacoed" the dime cold bore shot at 100yds!
A little begginer's luck was part of it I'm sure.

Finally, after getting the 5R and doing the finish...

Finally, after getting the 5R and doing the finish work with Duracoat and loading up some breaking in rounds, I'm ready for some warmer weather to get it out. I just (yesterday) got the R5 but have been working up loads for my 22-250 for varmints this fall so I don't know if or when I can get to my "best accuracy" load for the 5R before the offer expires. To the point, all else being equal, they build them based on bullet coefficient and velocity. The rest is environmental. Can you, or others, summarize what bullet has overall, been the best and what the velocity/charge has been working. I know there are unlimited combos but I've seen a couple of bullets come up over and over and a couple of powders too. I've been using a lot of Varget too. A buyer gets to order 2 dials. After that, they are $59. Thanks in advance.

PS> I have a nice selection of DuraKote paints and have done several guns, mainly for my son (yeah, kind of safe queens). I broke the barrel in and then started shooting for groups. My groups aren't really good until the gun heats up really good (about 7 consecutive shots)then it will shoot .5 to .4 moa groups at 100 yards with factory PRVI-Partison 165 grain boat tails. I noticed today during cleaning that the bolt face is actually not squarted up anymore. The very bottom of the bolt face where the stainless looking rivet is (about 1/8" down from the ejector pin)it looks as though it has been hammered into something and the bolt metal is actual deformed at the rivet and protrudes at that point beyond the remaining metal on the bolt face. I can see where this protrusion is actually rubbing on the receiver. All of the finish is worn off of this point of the bolt. Additionally the RH bolt lug is digned badly as though it is slamming into the receiver too when the gun recoils. I can actually feel the metal deformations dragging and clicking into the receiver when the bolt locks up. This damage was not present when I received the gun a week ago. Shooting the gun has caused this. I have e-mailed Remington for guidance. I await their response. Have you ever experienced anything like this? Any thoughts.......

(Shakeber here), I am considering a Nightforce bu...

(Shakeber here), I am considering a Nightforce but just recently was suggested a Vortex Viper. I've been on the hunt for a 700 ss milspec 5r now for a couple monthes. The first bit of info i got on the rifle was from scott at snipercountry. Great guy too, but closely behind I found this website. The information here is wonderful from toby and everyone else. I'm happy to say my rifle will be here next week. I payed a heavy price, but i believe its worth it. I also ordered a 5.5-22X50 NXS Nightforce with mildot reticle, zero-stop, and mil-radian turrets. I went with badger ordinance 20moa bases, medium ultra-lite NF rings, harus cosine indicator, and s-series 6 to 9 bipod. I've been shooting an AR30 338 lapua with pretty much the same set up. Scope is a 8-32X56 NXS. To much scope if anyone is curious. Thought i'd post and thank all of you for the info. I can't wait to shoot the .308. Also, toby did you decide on the fixed power scope based on only shooting 200 yrds, or did you have other reasons?

Hey Toby love the thread, been a follower since la...

Hey Toby love the thread, been a follower since late last year. I got my 5R last December, set it up with a Leupold MKIV LR M1 3.5-10X40 with Leupold MKIV rings and base. Even coated the stock with Herculiner. I have been doing some very extensive ballistics testing and reloading. just thought I would share some of my findings. I chronograph all my shots and record everything. My best load is 43.5gr Varget seated .015" off the lands (2.930"OAL 2.345"OGIVE) with 175gr SMK, CCI BR-2, & neck sized WIN casings. Yes that is very long and won't fit in the magazine. Depending on the air temperature I consistently get 2580-2600fps. Average 3 shot (center to center)groups range from 1 hole to 0.50" @ 100yds, 0.5-1.0" @ 200yds, and 1.0-1.5" @ 300yds. I'm in OK where 10-20mph wind is a daily norm. I'm sure my longer distances would tighten up w/o the wind drift. The 42.5gr of Varget seated at 2.800"OAL was getting me 2510-30fps in 40degree weather. Same goes for IMR 4064, it shoots very similar to Varget. I tested seating depths and found that less jump gives me smaller groups, in my gun. My magazine length is 2.840" so I load those as secondary rounds for hunting. Not quite as tight but good enough for a quick second shot if needed. They have the same POA so far out to 300 yds. Now I'm testing the Hornady 178gr AMAX with the same recipe. I'm expecting them to be identical to the 175gr SMK. Using my "Ballistic Field Tactical Edition" iphone app I can calculate my bullet drop out to 1,000 yards with precision. I have my drop chart inside my rear flip cap cover. I dial up 3 moa at 300 yards and put every bullet on paper/steel with precision. This is a fantastic app, I use it all the time for all my rifles and reloads. Anyway, that's just a little data that I have found with my gun. I plan on continuing my testing, I shoot every week so I'm constantly adding data. Take care, keep up the good work.

Very nice rundown of the Rem700 MilSpec 5R, Toby! ...

Very nice rundown of the Rem700 MilSpec 5R, Toby! What kind of scope would you look to to shoot beyond 600 yards?

Yeah, SMK, with Federal GMM match brass, 41g Varge...

Yeah, SMK, with Federal GMM match brass, 41g Varget, Federal GMM primers, and the seating depth is 2.855...

Hey Toby, I bought a 5R and have the barrel broke ...

Hey Toby, I bought a 5R and have the barrel broke in. Thanks for all you have shared. I bought my 5r in 308 back in September and soon thereafter broke the barrel in by shooting 20 rounds thru it and cleaning between each shot using Bore Tech supplies. I eventually set up my rifle as a hunting rifle. I used TPS for the rail and for the tactical rings. I installed a Leupold VX3 4.5 X 14 40mm with Boone and Crockett reticle. I am consistently getting .5 moa at 100 and 200 yds. using 165 gr. Sierra Gameking loaded with 44 gr. of Win 748 powder (~2740 muzzle vel.). I have access to a 1000 yd range but can only effectively shoot to 500 yds with my scope. Last week hit a coke can at 500 yds. I was totally stoked!!!
